Power Walking

Anyone who knows anything at all about exercise will tell you that walking is one of the best ways to get fit.

Add the use of some dumbbells for a little beneficial weight training, lots of fresh air for the good of your lungs and health and a serious amount of chatter and laughter for your well-being you have Power Walking, as we know it at GetSetGo-To-Fitness.

Power Walking is what is known in the fitness world as 'functional training'. It has also been called 'Fitness For Life', a way of training the body for the demands of living.

Classes concentrate on exercising in good posture, lengthening the spine and often easing pain and tightness in the lower back.

Breathing techniques are important, both for the development and proper use of the lungs and for the discovery of tummy muscles - a most neglected part of many work-outs!

Situps and crunches are rarely part of a class workout, with training totally out of doors, but the abdominals still get plenty of use and many participants claim a flatter, tighter stomach within just a few sessions of Power-Walking.

All the mixed ability classes last an hour and one of the most common complaints from those taking part is that the time has gone far too quickly. Most of the classes will suit everyone but anyone completely new to exercise or recovering from illness or injury would be most comfortable in Thursday's class at l l.15am.

Those wanting a greater challenge can join the Advanced class on Thursdays which lasts 1½ hours and starts at 9.15am. You will need to be fit and have some previous experience of Power-Walking in order to join this class.

All sessions feature exercises for the upper body, the trunk and the lower body, a fullbody workout which provides toning as well as strengthening the arms, legs, shoulders and back. Use of light weights, without machines, prevents over-development of the muscles and produces a well-balanced body - Fit For Life!
